This issue examined the fierce opposition to California's Proposition 209, a ballot measure that would eliminate racial preferences in state hiring and contracting. Heather Mac Donald's cover story analyzed the unlikely coalition of big business and diversity advocates fighting against the initiative. The issue also featured Midge Decter's review of David Brock's sympathetic biography of Hillary Clinton, and covered the heated Minnesota Senate race between Republican Boschwitz and Democrat Wellstone, while Michael Barone warned that a re-elected Clinton would face political troubles reminiscent of 1973.
