When I heard the news of Roger Bannister’s death last week at the age of 88, I recalled the first time I ever heard of Bannister, in the spring of 1963.
Jim Ryun is a former world-record-holding middle-distance runner and former U.S. Representative from Kansas, serving in Congress from 2003 to 2007. He was the first high schooler to break the four-minute mile. He contributed to The Weekly Standard with a piece reflecting on perseverance and competition.
