Newt Gingrich continues to be Dede Scozzafava's most prominent and most vocal defender. Among the reasons to support her, Gingrich writes today, is that she "opposes the health care plan being pushed for by President Obama and Nancy Pelosi." That may be true, but the NRCC is unable to cite a single example of Scozzafava saying that she'd vote against the House Democrats' health care bill. A Gingrich spokesman hasn't responded to requests for comment. I've asked four local reporters covering the race closely if they've come across any example of Scozzafava saying how she'd vote on HR 3200 and not one recalls her making such a statement. When I asked a Scozzafava spokesman in an email on September 29 if the assemblywoman would vote against HR 3200, he sent me this list of Scozzafava's principles on health care, but that doesn't say how she'd vote on the bill in the House. In a subsequent exchange the Scozzafava spokesman again declined to say how the candidate would vote on HR 3200, but pointed out this critical statement she'd offered on the Senate Finance Committee bill. Asked again this afternoon via email how Scozzafava would vote on HR 3200, Scozzafava spokesman Matt Burns replied: "AGAINST. It cuts medicare and doesn't address some of the root problems with rising health care costs. Should be looking at tort reform, for example." He says she's said this in public, but would have to "go back through clips" when he's done traveling to find an example of when and where she'd said so. So, it appears that Scozzafava may be tacking to the right -- but it would be good to hear the candidate herself declare her opposition to the health care bill now making its way through the House.
