The Obama campaign announced today that they raised $52 million in June, reversing their trend of three straight months of steep fundraising decline. It's an impressive total (though it still doesn't match his February haul of $55 million). Anyway, good for the Obama campaign. But it's worth revisiting a bit of credulous parroting from early June, when The Hill breathlessly reported that Obama could well raise $100 million dollars (insert Dr. Evil pause here) during the month. The piece simply passed on hype from Democratic fundraisers ("One hundred million dollars this June - it's definitely within reach," said Wade Randlett, who has raised more than $200,000 for Obama.") without even a perfunctory bit of skepticism toward a claim which was so obviously far removed from reality. But that's how it is with the media and His Hopeness: Even Obama's genuinely impressive accomplishments aren't good enough and must be puffed and spun into fantasy.
