Close readers will recall the assertion in last week's Casual by Fred Barnes that the Super Bowl is a conservative event and that "liberals often spend Super Sunday at the movies or browsing at Borders."
Scientific research now confirms Barnes's hypothesis. A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll of registered voters found that only 48 percent of Democrats are more likely to watch the Super Bowl than the State of the Union address. Among Republicans, 63 percent were more likely to watch the Super Bowl. But these numbers are merely suggestive. Decisive is the confession by the New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg, appearing on C-SPAN's Washington Journal, that he did not intend to watch the Super Bowl, that none of his friends did either, and that he wasn't even sure what teams were playing in it.
