Yesterday evening the Romney campaign announced that its candidate had fired, just now, the lawn services company which had been in his employ for some time and which, it seems, employs illegal immigrants. (Interestingly, I can't seem to find the letter announcing Romney's firing of the company on his website, but what seems like the gazillion other press releases the campaign sent out yesterday are there.) It appears that Romney found out that this company may have had illegal immigrants working for it some time ago; it was only yesterday, as the Boston Globe planned a major story on the company, that he sent his letter. Whatever you think about this - and I think the whole thing is pretty silly - this exchange at last week's debate between Romney and Rudy Giuliani is worth recalling:
Giuliani: You did have illegal immigrants working at your mansion, didn't you? Romney: No, I did not ...
I have a feeling that Romney will be asked more than a few questions about that denial at his next press availability.
