During a campaign conference call last summer about Obama's health care plan, I asked Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius if Obama's plan would cover all legal abortions. At a July 2007 speech to Planned Parenthood, Obama said that his health care plan would cover "reproductive health," but it wasn't clear if that included coverage for all legal abortions (i.e. the 100,000 abortions performed annually in the second and third trimester). Sebelius said she didn't know the answer to that question, but Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro assured me in a short email: "Yeah bro, I'll find out". Sadly, this bro never got an answer. Now that Sebelius has been appointed secretary of Health and Human Services, perhaps one senator might find it worth asking her during her confirmation hearing if Obama's health care plan will cover abortions, and, if so, how does this subsidization square with Obama's pledge to reduce the number of abortions. Perhaps some intrepid White House reporter (paging Jake Tapper) might pose this question to Obama's spokesman and, if we're really lucky, maybe even Obama himself.
