At 1:06 a.m. this morning Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro sent out an email documenting "JOHN MCCAIN'S 17 LIES" during the debate. At the top of the list of McCain's "lies" was his proposal that the Treasury should be able to purchase bad mortgages. The Obama campaign alleged that McCain "lied" by saying this was a "new plan" when in fact Obama first called for this move:
- MCCAIN PROPOSING NEW HOUSING PLAN. McCain today said he had a new plan to allow the Treasury to purchase and restructure mortgages. The truth is that this is not a new proposal and is already part of the rescue plan that was signed into law. It was Obama, not McCain who called for this move two weeks ago.
But now, the Obama campaign says that it opposes McCain's plan in light of " new details" have emerged.
