Greg Sargent reports that six Republican Senators have joined the growing chorus on the Hill calling for Dennis Blair to withdraw his appointment of Charles Freeman to head the National Intelligence Council. The letter has not yet been sent to Blair, but Sargent obtained a draft that had already been signed by Senators Tom Coburn, Kit Bond, Saxby Chambliss, Richard Burr, Orrin Hatch and James Risch -- that includes every Republican on the committee with the exception of Sen. Olympia Snowe. (Update: Snowe's office confirmed to THE WEEKLY STANDARD that she will sign onto the letter.) According to Sargent, the letter states that the undersigned were "surprised" by Freeman's appointment in light of his lack of "intelligence analysis experience." The Senators also question whether, in light of "Freeman's highly controversial statements about China and Israel," he will be able to "convey the Intelligence Community's judgments in a measured and non-provocative manner." CQ had written on March 6 that Freeman was "hitting Capitol Hill to soothe the worries of lawmakers" and that Senator Bond had met with Freeman on Friday and was "going to think it over during the weekend." The letter comes on the heels of another letter to Blair from Rep. Pete Hoekstra and separate letters to President Obama expressing concern about Freeman's view on and ties to the People Republic of China from Rep. Wolf and 87 Chinese dissidents and human rights activists. Also, nine members of the House, including two Democrats, signed a letter to the Inspector General requesting an investigation into Freeman's financial ties to foreign governments.
