Redstate reports on the McCain conference call this morning, where one commenter, who was also on the call, writes:

The Senator is right now saying that Lieberman should "play a role" in national security issues. That sounds like a possible SecDef to me.

Despite all the talk of Lieberman as a possible VP in a McCain administration, this would seem like a more realistic scenario. Although I'm not sure Secretary Gates has any plans for leaving the Pentagon regardless of who wins the election come Novemeber--after all, the guy has exceeded all expectations and kept a spectacularly low profile since he replaced Rumsfeld. It might not be so far fetched to think that a President Obama would be just as likely to keep him on for a year or two as a President McCain. Why fix it if it ain't broke?
