People are calling Academy Award TM-winning director Jonathan Demme's Man From Plains his most terrifying film since Silence of the Lambs! That's what I'm calling it, anyway. In case you've missed it, Jonathan Demme, worried that his Manchurian Candidate remake wasn't enough on the nose, has decided to make a difference again, this time helming a documentary on Jimmy Carter and his "fight for peace." The film's official site has the trailer, but if you click here, you can watch it in glorious hi-definition - it's just like being there! The whole thing is beyond parody, from the title cards labeling Carter "The Conscience of a Nation," to the shot of the man moaning, "Bless you, Mister President," to the use of a rap track at the 1:33 mark (I can't make out who it is, but maybe some hep cat out there can; I'm laying 5:1 odds it's Puffy). My guess is that Demme won't venture into any of Carter's less attractive moments, like when his campaign staff handed out racist fliers at a KKK rally as part of his 1970 gubernatorial campaign. People change, and holding them accountable for their past actions is such a downer. Just ask the director of Caged Heat!
