With 100 out of 100 counties reporting, North Carolina's voters have approved a constitutional amendment stating that "marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State." Sixty-one percent of voters cast ballots in favor of the amendment.

Maggie Gallagher notes: "Even Public Policy Polling (a Democratic firm), which showed marriage amendment passing by 16 points right before the election, were shocked by the massive victory for the North Carolina marriage amendment, admitting via tweet: 'Hate to say it, but I don’t believe polls showing support for gay marriage nationally. Any times there is a vote it doesn’t back it up.'"

"The state becomes the last southern state to approve an anti-gay marriage amendment and joins 30 others with similar measure," MSNBC reports. In 2008, North Carolina narrowly voted for Barack Obama over John McCain in the presidential election.
