John McCain has defeated former congressman J.D. Hayworth in the Arizona GOP Senate primary. With 40 percent of precincts reporting, McCain is clobbering Hayworth by 27 points.
During the primary campaign, McCain successfully tacked to the right, particularly on the immigration issue, and was aided by a lackluster opponent. The death of Hayworth's campaign may have actually occurred on June 21, when an infomercial of Hayworth hawking free government money surfaced.
