The senators write Harry Reid to "request that you immediately instruct the appropriate Senate committee chairs to open investigations and hold public hearings concerning the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN)." The document notes the videos that have blown up this week after being posted on Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website and adds that "these events are only the latest chapters in ACORN's long and troubled legal history." The letter also quotes an NPR report titled "ACORN's Money Tree has Many Branches" as evidence for the need to examine the "giant web" of affiliates the group maintains and whether taxpayer money might be finding them. "American taxpayers must be able to trust that their money is being spent responsibly, and is not being used to fund criminal enterprises." Well, no one ever thought our money was being spent responsibly, but at least we didn't have to worry that the last administration was funding criminal enterprises that trafficked in under age sex slaves and phony voter registration cards. The full letter is available here -- the signatures are (I assume) entirely Republican and mostly illegible.
